Pet Tips Text - Dental Disease

View the video here.

Hello, I am Dr. Matt Bechtel, one of the Associate Vets at Manchester West Veterinary Hospital.

Today we are going to talk about dental care and your pet.

Today we are examining this pet, Cruiser. We are looking at his teeth basically. What we see here is that he is starting to have some early problems with his gums and with his teeth which we call periodontal disease.

Basically periodontal disease is the most common disease we see in dogs. It affects about 85 percent of dogs over the age of 3 years.

Here at Manchester West we stress the importance of the prevention of dental disease and periodontal disease. Here are some of the ways that we recommend preventing these diseases:

The most sufficient way is by brushing the teeth of the dogs, as Cruiser likes. We have a beef flavored tooth paste. This actually has enzymes in it break up the tartar and remove it from the teeth. We recommend brushing the dog’s teeth once or twice a week and that has proven to delay the onset of dental disease.

Basically periodontal disease can affect the heart, the liver, and the kidneys and can cause some long term serious problems. Therefore that's why we at Manchester West find it one of the most important diseases to prevent.

Other ways to prevent that are some chews and some different kinds of foods that you can use. This food is called TD. It is actually designed to scrap the teeth just like a tooth brush would just when the dogs bite down on it. They are very large kibbles and we have found that as a very large success with that, along with different types of raw hide chews that dogs can have called C.E.T. Chews that dogs can have.

That is a summary on gum disease. Thank you very much.
