Pet Tips Text - Dog Holiday Peril

View the video here.

Hello, I am Dr. David Roberts from Manchester West Veterinary Hospital and I am here with Cruiser my Christmas Elf, and we are going to talk to you about some of the ways to have your healthy holidays and keep them healthy.

We are going to go over some of the Christmas perils that we worry about with our pets, especially dogs.

The first two are plants. The poinsettia. The leaves from the poinsettia can create an upset stomach with our dogs, so we want to keep them up high not on the floor where a dog can eat them.

The worse one however is mistletoe and all parts of this plant can be toxic. It can actually cause kidney failure, so you want to make sure this up on the ceiling where it needs to be.

The second thing we need to look at is our Christmas tree, and that is the thing we cherish much but remember, electrical cords and the lights that are supplied by that can naturally be a problem for two reasons. First, dogs will sometime eat these. Other times when they are on plugged in and active of course these pets can get shocked and it creates a lot of oral trauma.

Other things on our tree are the ornaments these are balls and look like little toy balls to your dog and of course they are glass. Sometimes dogs will actually eat these and we will have to go in and surgically remove these from patients.

Same thing with tinsel, its great looks great but what we worry about again is our pets eating this and having it get obstructed in their intestinal track. When we start looking at presents under the tree, we worry about two things, ribbon and bows are are really a problem. This is probably our worse peril for dogs and cats because if they eat this it will start to get obstructed in their intestinal tract.

The other thing that I worry about is candy and food items under the tree. If you have candy wrapped or a fruit cake wrapped your dog will sniff it out and they will find it and open it for you and they will eat it.

The last thing in the kitchen is the chocolate, if you refer back to our Halloween and our Thanksgiving videos we talked about how chocolate can be a big problem for pets. During the holidays it is worse because this is baking chocolate . Baking chocolate is about 4 times more concentrated then the product that is toxic to our dogs and cats.

So this holiday season let’s keep it happy but keep it healthy. Keep all of these things away from your pet.

Thank you very much. I am Dr. David Roberts, Manchester West Veterinary Hospital wishing everyone a very Happy Holiday.

If you have any questions about any of these things please do not hesitate to call our hospital. Thank you and again Happy Holidays.
